TLDR Electrospun nanofibers might be a promising new treatment for hair loss.
Androgenic alopecia, a hair thinning and loss condition, affects about 50% of the global population. Current treatments like minoxidil and finasteride aren't always effective, and surgical options are limited by cost and donor follicle availability. The document reviews the potential of electrospun nanofibers, ultrafine polymeric biomaterials with a diameter less than 1 μm, in managing androgenic alopecia. These nanofibers, due to their high porosity and increased surface area, facilitate cell attachment and proliferation. They can be combined with active pharmaceuticals, such as stem cells, to treat the condition. The review concludes that controlled-release nanofibers could improve conventional therapeutics and solve dose-related problems, providing a promising future direction for androgenic alopecia treatment.
