Effects of Topical Application of Astragalus Membranaceus in Spontaneous Alopecia Mice Model

The study investigated the effects of Astragalus membranaceus (AM) on hair regrowth in C57BL/6 mice with natural hair loss. Mice treated with 1% AM topically for 2 weeks showed hair regrowth, reduced tapering hair shafts, fewer broken hair follicles, and decreased CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration compared to control mice. Additionally, AM treatment lowered the expression levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-4, and significantly increased KGF expressions in Hs68 fibroblast cells. These findings suggested that AM could be a potential alternative therapy for hair loss.
