TLDR People with primary scarring alopecia have higher risks of other health issues like vitamin D deficiency and thyroid disease.
This study investigated the systemic comorbidities associated with primary scarring alopecia by reviewing the medical records of 240 patients from Los Angeles dermatology clinics between 2018 and 2022. It found that patients with central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) had a significantly higher risk of concomitant traction alopecia, androgenetic alopecia, and vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, compared to the general US population, individuals with scarring alopecia, including CCCA and lichen planopilaris/frontal fibrosing alopecia, exhibited higher prevalences of vitamin D deficiency, metabolic syndrome, depression, anxiety, thyroid disease, uterine fibroids, anemia, atopy, androgenetic alopecia, and breast cancer. The study concludes that larger, diverse, population-based studies are necessary to further understand these comorbidities, and dermatologists should conduct comprehensive reviews of systems in patients with scarring alopecia to screen for and manage associated conditions.
