TLDR Tofacitinib helps mice grow more hair by increasing noggin and BMP4 levels, possibly better than minoxidil.
The study from October 5, 2018, examined the effects of topical tofacitinib on hair growth in 14 male C57BL/6 mice over 21 days, comparing seven treated with tofacitinib to seven treated with DMSO as a control. The results indicated that tofacitinib-treated mice exhibited a greater number of hair follicles in the anagen phase, longer hair infundibulum, and thinner interfollicular epidermis. RT-PCR analysis showed significant increases in noggin and BMP4 mRNA expressions in the tofacitinib group compared to controls and minoxidil-treated groups. The study concluded that tofacitinib promotes hair growth by upregulating noggin and BMP4, potentially offering a superior treatment mechanism for hair loss disorders than minoxidil.
