TLDR MED1 affects skin wound healing differently in young and old mice.
The study investigated the role of MED1 in skin wound healing using keratinocyte-specific MED1 null mice (Med1(epi-/-)). In 8-week-old Med1(epi-/-) mice, wound healing was accelerated with increased epithelial migration and cell proliferation, linked to decreased follistatin expression and enhanced MAPK pathway activity. However, in 6-month-old Med1(epi-/-) mice, wound healing was delayed with reduced cell proliferation and hair follicle stem cell contribution, aligning with previous findings of diminished hair follicle bulge stem cells in older mice. This highlighted MED1's novel function in keratinocytes and suggested potential therapeutic approaches for skin wound healing and aging.
