TLDR PRP treatment may help with alopecia areata, especially in newer cases.
This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment in 17 patients with patch-type alopecia areata (AA). After three months, the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score significantly decreased from 6.82 ± 4.96 to 4.35 ± 4.58 (P = 0.01). Six patients (35.3%) had an excellent response, one had a good response, one had a partial response, and nine had no response. Excluding three chronic AA patients, the response rate increased to 64.3%. No severe side effects were observed, and only one patient experienced a relapse within 1 year. The study suggests PRP may be a beneficial treatment for AA, especially in patients with a shorter disease duration, but further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and efficacy.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
