TLDR Pilomatricoma can develop into various hair-related structures.
The study on pilomatricoma, involving 53 patients, revealed that this hair follicle-originated neoplasm could differentiate not only towards the hair matrix and hair cortex but also towards the follicular infundibulum, outer root sheath, and hair bulge. This broader differentiation potential was supported by the presence of various keratin types in different epithelial structures. The research highlighted that epithelial keratins were absent in certain cell types but abundant in squamoid epithelium, indicating specific differentiation pathways. These findings suggested a more diversified differentiation potential for pilomatricoma than previously understood, possibly due to the use of different anti-keratin bodies in the analysis.
