March 2009 in “Experimental Dermatology” The study on pilomatricoma, involving 53 cases, revealed that this condition could differentiate not only towards the hair matrix and hair cortex but also towards the follicular infundibulum, outer root sheath, and hair bulge. The research utilized immunohistochemical analysis with 10 monospecific anti-keratin antibodies and anti-filaggrin antibody. It was found that basophilic, transitional, and shadow cells did not react with these antibodies, unlike the infundibular-type epithelium, which was positive for K1, K10, and filaggrin. Additionally, trichilemmal keratinization showed positivity for K14 and K16, while hair bulge-like structures were positive for K19. This indicated a heterogeneous pattern of differentiation in pilomatricoma.
