Low Level Laser Therapy
aka - LLLT
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, involves the use of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular activity with the aim of promoting healing and reducing inflammation. The history of LLLT dates back to the 1960s when Hungarian physician Endre Mester first observed the hair regrowth and wound healing effects of low-power laser light on mice. This discovery led to further research and the eventual application of LLLT in various medical and cosmetic fields, including hair loss treatment.
In the context of alopecia, LLLT is utilized for its potential to enhance hair growth and thickness. The mechanism of action is believed to involve the stimulation of epidermal stem cells in the hair follicle, shifting the hair growth cycle from the resting phase (telogen) to the growth phase (anagen). LLLT may also increase blood flow to the scalp and reduce inflammation, creating a more favorable environment for hair growth.
Research on LLLT as a treatment for hair loss has yielded positive results, indicating its efficacy and safety for this purpose. Clinical trials, such as those reviewed in "Lasers in Surgery and Medicine" and "Lasers in Medical Science," have demonstrated increases in hair density and thickness in patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) undergoing LLLT compared to control groups. Devices approved by the FDA for LLLT hair loss treatment, such as laser combs and helmets, have been shown to improve hair count and density with minimal side effects.
The sentiment within the community toward LLLT is mixed, with some users reporting positive experiences in terms of hair growth, but most remain skeptical. Community discussions often revolve around the best devices, optimal usage frequency, and combination with other hair loss treatments for enhanced results. While some members have expressed skepticism regarding LLLT's effectiveness or concern about the cost of devices, others consider it a valuable component of their hair care regimen.
In summary, Low-Level Laser Therapy is a non-invasive treatment option for hair loss that uses red and near-infrared light to stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health. While research supports its efficacy and safety, individual experiences with LLLT may vary, and it is often used in conjunction with other treatments for maximum benefit.
