TLDR Myristoleic acid helps hair growth by boosting cell growth and recycling processes in hair follicle cells.
In 2021, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of Myristoleic Acid (MA) on hair growth. The research found that MA promotes the anagen phase of hair growth by activating the Wnt/β-Catenin and ERK pathways in Dermal Papilla Cells (DPCs) through a process called autophagy. MA was found to increase DPC proliferation, stimulate the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, and induce autophagosome formation. It also increased the phosphorylation levels of Wnt/β-catenin proteins and the levels of phospho-extracellular signal regulated kinases (ERK), leading to changes in protein expression levels and further DPC proliferation. The study concluded that MA could potentially be used as a treatment for hair loss conditions such as alopecia.
