Micro‐RNA‐31 controls hair cycle‐associated changes in gene expression programs of the skin and hair follicle

TLDR miR-31 regulates hair growth by controlling gene expression in hair follicles.
The study demonstrated that micro-RNA-31 (miR-31) played a crucial role in regulating gene expression during different stages of the hair cycle in mice. miR-31 levels increased during the anagen (growth) phase and decreased during the catagen (regression) and telogen (quiescence) phases. Inhibiting miR-31 during early and mid-anagen phases accelerated hair growth and altered hair follicle cell differentiation. miR-31 was found to negatively regulate several genes, including Fgf10, components of Wnt and BMP signaling pathways, and keratin genes, which are essential for hair growth and structure. This regulation ensured the proper balance of gene expression necessary for hair follicle development and hair fiber formation.
