TLDR BMP signaling controls hair follicle size and cell growth by affecting cell cycle genes.
The study concluded that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling played a crucial role in regulating hair follicle size and modulating the expression of cell cycle-associated genes, particularly through the cell cycle inhibitor p27Kip1. Transgenic mice overexpressing the BMP antagonist noggin and p27Kip1 knockout mice exhibited larger hair follicles and increased cell proliferation. These findings suggested that BMP signaling pathways could be potential targets for therapeutic interventions in hair growth disorders such as androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.
