TLDR Keratin peptides in hair may help identify gender and ethnicity, but more research is needed.
The study explored the potential of using keratin peptide signatures from human hair shafts to distinguish gender and ethnicity, particularly in forensic contexts where nuclear DNA is unavailable. Hair shaft proteins from 40 healthy subjects aged 21 to 40 were analyzed using gel electrophoresis-based proteomics. Results showed significant differences in the abundance of specific keratin peptides (K81, K83, K86) between genders and among ethnic groups in Malaysia. These findings suggested that keratin peptide profiles could potentially be used for forensic identification, although further research with a larger sample size was needed to substantiate these results.
