TLDR Salvia plebeia extract can stimulate hair growth.
The study investigated the hair growth potential of Salvia plebeia (SP) extract using human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and C57BL/6 mice. SP extract significantly increased hDPC proliferation at doses of 15.6 and 31.3 μg/mL and enhanced hair regrowth in mice over 21 days. The extract activated Wnt/β-catenin signaling, increased hepatocyte growth factor, and decreased TGF-β1 and SMAD2/3 levels. It also promoted anti-apoptotic and proliferative effects by increasing the Bcl-2/Bax ratio and activating ERK and Akt proteins. The findings suggested that SP extract could stimulate hair growth, though further research is needed to identify the specific bioactive components and mechanisms involved.
