TLDR Certain growth factors affect hair loss in women and could be targeted for treatment.
In 2018, a study involving 60 women with non-scarring alopecia, specifically androgenetic alopecia and telogen hair loss, was conducted to examine the role of growth factors VEGF, KGF, EGF, and TGF-01 in alopecia development. The study discovered that the expression of these growth factors differed in women with alopecia compared to healthy individuals, with VEGF having the most significant impact on androgenetic alopecia development. VEGF also affected telogen hair loss more than EGF. The results suggested potential use of VEGF and KGF growth factors, and TGF-01 inhibitors, as treatment for patients with androgenetic alopecia and telogen hair loss.
