TLDR Finasteride niosomes were developed and found to be effective in treating hair loss, with better results than commercial minoxidil, and could be a promising topical treatment for hair loss.
The study developed and evaluated finasteride niosomes (FIN-NIS) as a dermal delivery system for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a common hair loss disorder. Finasteride, an oral drug that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, has been used to treat AGA, but long-term oral administration can lead to serious systemic side effects. The researchers found that FIN-NIS enhanced finasteride permeation and retention, particularly increasing drug concentration in hair follicles. The therapeutic efficacy of FIN-NIS on testosterone-induced AGA mice was higher than that of commercial minoxidil in terms of hair regrowth and anagen restoration. Therefore, FIN-NIS could be a promising dermal topical delivery system for the treatment of AGA.
