TLDR Over 50% of women over 50 experience hair loss, with minoxidil being the only proven effective treatment.
This document from 2008 discusses Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), a common condition that affects over 50% of women over the age of 50. While the cause of FPHL is not clear, androgens such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) may play a role in some cases. Current treatments for FPHL are limited in number and degree of efficacy, with topical minoxidil being the only compound found to be effective in treating FPHL in controlled trials. Other treatments such as antiandrogens and hair transplants are also discussed, but more research is needed to determine their effectiveness.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
