TLDR FPHL is common in women, influenced by genetics and hormones, and can be treated with medications, laser therapy, or hair transplantation.
This article provides a comprehensive review of female pattern hair loss (FPHL), including its pathophysiology, diagnosis, systemic associations, and current treatments. FPHL is the most common cause of alopecia in women and is influenced by genetics, hormones, and environmental factors. Decreased levels of estrogen are a contributing factor. FPHL is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Treatments for FPHL are limited, but minoxidil and spironolactone combination therapy, topical finasteride and minoxidil combination therapy, and low-level laser therapy have shown promising results. Hair transplantation is an option for individuals over the age of 25 who are unresponsive to alternative treatments.
