TLDR Indian dermatologists recommend treating common hair loss with a balanced diet, stress reduction, mild shampoos, and sometimes minoxidil and supplements.
In 2018, a panel of 120 dermatologists across 11 Indian cities developed a consensus on the management of telogen effluvium (TE), a common hair loss condition. The experts recommended a multi-faceted approach, including dietary modifications, stress management, and the use of specific hair care products. They emphasized the importance of a balanced diet rich in iron, proteins, and vitamins, and the use of mild shampoos. Stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation were also suggested. The panel also discussed the role of minoxidil in the management of chronic TE, but not for acute TE. Nutritional supplements, including amino acids, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, selenium, and folic acid, were considered important, especially in cases of nutritional deficiency. Biotin supplementation was deemed useful at recommended dietary allowance (RDA) limits of 30 μg. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy was not recommended for acute TE, but could be useful in chronic TE. The panel emphasized the importance of patient counseling to reduce noncompliance with treatment, and suggested that results may take 3-4 months to appear.

Someone's brother tried Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss; it had minimal effect on hair but improved skin appearance. Microneedling at home was suggested as a more sustainable alternative.

They recommended scalp biopsies in unclear cases of DUPA, twice weekly to twice daily shampooing for topical minoxidil users, and two sessions spaced one month apart with follow up at month three to determine the effectiveness of PRP treatment.
