TLDR Extracts from Alnus sibirica and oregonin may help with hair growth and prevent hair loss.
The research investigated the effects of 60% ethanol extracts from Alnus sibirica and a compound called oregonin on hair growth and hair loss. The study found that these substances promoted the proliferation of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells, increased the expression of hair growth-related genes, and resulted in faster hair growth in mice. They also had anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects on hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity on human hair dermal papilla cells, and could counter changes in oxidative stress-induced cytokine and testosterone-induced dihydrotestosterone production, key pathways in hair loss. The substances also increased the level of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), crucial for hair growth, reduced the expression of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGF-β1), associated with hair loss, and decreased DHT content, a hormone associated with hair loss. The study suggests that 60% ethanol extracts from Alnus sibirica and oregonin could potentially be used as natural treatments for hair loss.
