TLDR A specific group of stem cells can help regenerate hair continuously.
The study established in vitro culture systems to control the regenerative ability of hair follicle-resident epithelial stem cells (HFSCs) and identified a subpopulation of CD34+/CD49f+/Itgβ5+ cells with multipotency crucial for continuous hair regeneration. These cells were located in the uppermost area of the bulge region in both mice and humans, surrounded by tenascin. The findings suggested functional heterogeneity among bulge HFSCs and highlighted the potential of the culture system for hair follicle regenerative therapy.
