The Efficacy of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in Burn Injuries: A Systematic Review

Michael Kohlhauser, Alexandru Tuca, Lars‐Peter Kamolz
TLDR Adipose-derived stem cells help heal burns but need more research.
This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) in treating burn injuries across 21 animal studies involving 517 animals, primarily rodents. The review found that ADSCs significantly enhance wound healing by improving immunoregulation, neovascularization, granulation tissue formation, re-epithelialization, and remodeling. Despite these promising results, the application of ADSCs in burn care remains in the early experimental stages, with significant methodological weaknesses identified, such as unclear risks of selection, performance, and detection biases. Further research with more rigorous study designs is needed to optimize the therapeutic potential of ADSCs in clinical settings.
