As a carrier–transporter for hair follicle reconstitution, platelet-rich plasma promotes proliferation and induction of mouse dermal papilla cells

    The study conducted in 2017 investigated the role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in hair follicle reconstitution. The researchers found that 5% activated PRP significantly enhanced the proliferation and hair-inductive capability of mouse and human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) in vitro and promoted mouse hair follicle formation in vivo. PRP also formed a three-dimensional gel after activation, which was used as a scaffold to form many de novo hair follicles. However, when human DPCs and neonatal foreskin epidermal cells were transplanted, no hair follicle induction was observed. The study concluded that PRP could be a candidate bioactive scaffold for cell-based hair follicle regeneration, but further work is needed to fully reconstitute functional human hair follicles.
