TLDR Women with hair loss often have deficiencies in iron, vitamins, minerals, and lower thyroid function, suggesting the need for nutritional and hormonal treatment.
This study examined 200 Jordanian women, half with hair loss and half as healthy controls, to explore the relationship between hair loss and various biochemical, hematological, and hormonal parameters. It found significant deficiencies in hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, selenium, zinc, copper, calcium, folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin D among women with hair loss, alongside lower thyroid function markers (TSH and FREE T4), though still within normal ranges. Key predictors of hair loss included younger age, lower levels of selenium, TSH, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and ferritin. The study suggests that addressing these deficiencies and hormonal imbalances could be crucial for treatment, recommending routine screening and targeted nutritional interventions. Despite its robust methodology, the study acknowledges limitations such as its single-city sample and lack of dietary and genetic assessments, suggesting future research should involve larger, multicenter cohorts.
