TLDR Low levels of ferritin, TSH, and certain vitamins are linked to hair loss in women of different ages.
In this retrospective study from 2021, researchers examined the relationship between levels of ferritin, TSH, zinc, Hb, vitamin B12, and vitamin D and hair loss in different age groups of women. The study involved 300 female patients, aged 17 to 61 years, diagnosed with chronic diffuse hair loss, and a control group of 70 healthy females aged between 20 – 57 years. The patients were divided into three age-based groups; 17 -32 (n=166), 33 -48 (n=73), and 49 -61 (n=61). The study found that ferritin, TSH, and Hemoglobin (Hb) levels were significantly reduced in female patients aged between 17 to 32 years compared to the control group. In women aged between 33-48 years, TSH and vitamin B12 were significantly decreased. In the older age group (49-61 years), TSH, vitamin B12, and vitamin D levels were significantly decreased. The study concluded that these deficiencies could be contributing factors to hair loss in these age groups.
