Association Between Serum Zinc, Vitamin D, and Ferritin Levels and Hair Loss: A Cross-Sectional Study of Patients at Al-Ajilat Central Clinic

    Najah Althabit, Najah Althabit
TLDR Hair loss is linked to low levels of zinc, vitamin D, and ferritin.
This cross-sectional study conducted at Al-Ajilat Central Clinic assessed the association between micronutrient deficiencies and hair loss in 272 Libyan patients (136 males and 136 females). The study found that individuals with hair loss had significantly lower serum levels of zinc (71.48 vs 94.28 μg/dL), ferritin (35.83 vs 126.56 ng/mL), and vitamin D (21.42 vs 60.59 ng/mL) compared to controls. A significant correlation was observed between hair loss and lower levels of zinc and ferritin in both genders (p<0.001). Additionally, 52.8% of the hair loss group had a vitamin D deficiency. The findings suggest a strong relationship between hair loss and deficiencies in zinc, vitamin D, and ferritin, highlighting the importance of evaluating micronutrient levels in patients with hair loss.
