TLDR Low serum ferritin is linked to hair loss in women.
This study investigated the link between low serum ferritin levels and non-scarring alopecia in 102 women from Punjab, Pakistan, with 51 having alopecia and 51 as controls. Results showed that 41.2% of alopecia cases had low ferritin compared to 19.6% of controls, with low ferritin significantly predicting alopecia (OR=2.87, p=0.02). The study concludes that low serum ferritin is significantly associated with non-scarring alopecia, suggesting that routine ferritin assessment could help identify iron deficiency as a modifiable factor in hair loss.
