TLDR Low ferritin levels can indicate iron deficiency as a cause of hair loss.
Ferritin, a key regulator of iron homeostasis, is a sensitive and specific marker for diagnosing iron deficiency. In patients with diffuse hair loss, measuring serum ferritin can help rule out iron deficiency as a cause of alopecia. Although ferritin levels can be elevated in various inflammatory conditions, its role in skin and hair disorders remains unclear. This article reviews ferritin's structure and function and offers a clinical guide for its use in diagnosing hair loss.
