TLDR Iron deficiency anemia may contribute to hair loss in women with Telogen effluvium.
The study "Evaluation of MCV/RDW Ratio and Correlations with Ferritin in Telogen Effluvium Patients" retrospectively analyzed medical data of 250 female patients diagnosed with Telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss, and compared it with data from 250 healthy individuals. The researchers found that the ratio of Mean Corpuscular Volume to Red Cell Distribution Width (MCV/RDW), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), MCV, and ferritin were significantly lower in the Telogen effluvium group compared to the control group. However, no significant correlation was found between the MCV/RDW ratio and ferritin levels in Telogen effluvium patients. The study concluded that iron deficiency anemia could be a factor in female patients with Telogen effluvium, and suggested that laboratory tests should be routinely used in the diagnosis and treatment phase of patients who present with hair loss complaints.
