TLDR Low iron levels are linked to hair loss in women.
The study, involving 200 women (100 with alopecia and 100 controls), found a significant association between low serum ferritin levels and non-scarring alopecia in non-menopausal women. The mean serum ferritin levels were notably lower in the alopecia group (20.47±17.50) compared to the control group (27.87±17.51). This was particularly evident in cases of alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia, but not in telogen effluvium cases. The study concluded that low iron stores are an independent risk factor for alopecia, suggesting the need for regular laboratory examinations to manage the disease. However, the study's limitations include a small sample size and a limited population area.
