TLDR Women with diffuse hair loss often have lower iron and vitamin D levels, but their thyroid function is typically normal.
The study involved 40 women with diffuse hair loss and 40 healthy controls, investigating the relationship between serum ferritin, vitamin D, and thyroid function. The results indicated that women with diffuse hair loss had significantly lower levels of serum ferritin and vitamin D than the control group. Specifically, 32.5% of the hair loss group had serum ferritin levels below 10 ng/mL, and 22.5% had vitamin D deficiency, with 67.5% having insufficiency. No significant difference in thyroid function was found between the groups. The study concluded that low serum ferritin and vitamin D levels are associated with diffuse hair loss in females, suggesting that iron and vitamin D supplementation could be beneficial. However, due to the small sample size, no direct relationship with thyroid abnormality was established. Further large-scale research is needed.
