    The review from May 2020 examined the role of Vitamin D and its receptor (VDR) in hair and scalp disorders. It highlighted that Vitamin D is crucial in maintaining various biological systems, including skin and adnexa. Through its receptor, Vitamin D decreases keratinocyte proliferation, improves their differentiation, and modulates both cutaneous innate and adaptive immunity. The integrity of the hair is dependent on the dermis, epidermis, and hair cycles, and VDR plays a vital role in preserving hair follicle integrity. However, the exact role of Vitamin D in the hair follicle cycle was uncertain at the time of the review, with contradicting results in literature. Despite this, the review suggested that Vitamin D likely plays a significant role in various forms of human alopecia. The review aimed to provide evidence about the role of Vitamin D and its receptor in trichology, focusing on scarring and non-scarring alopecia, and the potential therapeutic use of Vitamin D for hair and scalp disorders.
