TLDR SFRP2 and PTGDS may be key factors in female hair loss.
This study investigated genetic differences between bald and non-bald hair follicles in female pattern hair loss (FPHL) using next-generation sequencing on samples from 18 patients. RNA transcriptome analysis identified several differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with HOXB13, SFRP2, PTGDS, CXCR3, SFRP4, SOD3, and DCN significantly upregulated in bald follicles. SFRP2 and PTGDS were consistently highly expressed in all samples, and their elevated protein levels were confirmed through western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. The study suggests SFRP2 and PTGDS as potential biomarkers and contributors to hair loss in FPHL, providing a basis for further research on its pathogenesis and therapeutic targets.
