TLDR Squalene may be a marker for certain types of alopecia.
The study involved 31 subjects with alopecia and 21 control subjects, and used High-Performance Liquid Chromatography techniques to quantify squalene and lactic acid in hair bulbs. The results showed a significantly larger amount of squalene in the hair bulbs of subjects with alopecia and damage to hair sheaths, but no significant differences in lactic acid levels between the alopecia and control groups. Therefore, the study suggests that squalene could be a metabolic and pathogenic marker for some alopecia conditions.
