TLDR Saw palmetto extract safely improves hair growth and reduces hair loss.
This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a proprietary extract of bioactive fatty acids from saw palmetto for promoting hair growth and reducing hair loss in adults with self-perceived thinning hair. Conducted over 90 days with 60 participants (40 receiving the active treatment and 20 on placebo), the study found significant improvements in hair growth metrics for those taking the saw palmetto extract. The active group showed notable increases in terminal and vellus hair counts in both anterior and posterior areas compared to baseline and placebo, with total terminal hair counts improving 7-fold and total hair count improving 12-fold compared to placebo. Additionally, a significant reduction in hair shedding was observed in the active group. No adverse events were reported, suggesting that the saw palmetto extract is a safe and effective treatment for hair growth in both men and women.
