TLDR Botanical treatments like saw palmetto, rosemary oil, and ginseng may help reduce hair loss in menopausal women.
This mini-review examines botanical drug preparations as alternative treatments for hair loss in menopausal women, a condition affecting up to 52% of this population due to hormonal changes. Conventional treatments like minoxidil have limited efficacy and potential side effects, prompting the exploration of ethnopharmacological remedies. The review highlights key botanical interventions such as saw palmetto, which reduces dihydrotestosterone levels, rosemary oil, which enhances scalp circulation, and ginseng, which promotes follicle proliferation. Emerging evidence suggests these plant extracts offer multi-target benefits, including phytoestrogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, and nutraceuticals have shown promise in improving hair density. However, the review notes challenges such as limited menopausal-specific research and standardization issues, advocating for interdisciplinary trials to integrate traditional and modern approaches for sustainable, culturally attuned solutions.
