TLDR Oral minoxidil is an effective alternative for hair loss but may cause more unwanted hair growth.
The comprehensive review and meta-analysis by Faizan Fazal and colleagues compared oral minoxidil (OM) and topical minoxidil (TM) for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) across four studies with 257 patients. The analysis found no significant difference in hair density improvement between OM and TM, though OM showed better results in the Sinclair hair-shedding score. Both treatments were effective, but OM had a higher incidence of hypertrichosis. OM is considered an effective alternative or adjunct treatment, especially for those intolerant to TM. The study emphasizes the need for more clinical trials to explore specific outcomes and potentially gain FDA approval for higher OM doses.
