TLDR Finasteride treatment changes urine metabolomics and steroid signatures, potentially monitoring effectiveness but may cause sexual side effects.
A study analyzed the urine of male pattern baldness patients who took finasteride for a year and found changes in steroid signatures and metabolites related to androgen metabolism, lipid metabolism, and oxidative stress. The treatment caused significant changes in steroid hormone metabolism, as shown by analyzing urinary metabolomics profiling. The study found that finasteride treatment for male pattern baldness resulted in significant changes in urine metabolomics and steroid signatures after a year, which could be used as biomarkers to monitor treatment effectiveness. However, the treatment also led to increased estrogen levels in patients, which could cause sexual side effects. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
