TLDR The model showed that immune system guardians and the cytokine interferon-γ are key in alopecia areata progression.
The study developed a mathematical model to understand the dynamics of alopecia areata (AA), focusing on the interactions between immune system components and hair follicle immune privilege agents. The model successfully captured key processes in AA, particularly the roles of immune privilege guardians and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). Elevated levels of effector autoreactive CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells/NKG2D+ cells were identified as both indicators and drivers of the disease. The model provided insights into the temporal development of AA and highlighted the importance of immune system interactions in disease progression.
