TLDR Oxidative stress may contribute to hair loss in alopecia areata and antioxidants could potentially help as a treatment.
The review discusses Alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune disease causing hair loss, and its unclear pathogenesis, which is thought to involve immune privilege collapse, genetic factors, allergies, microbiota, and psychological stress. The focus of the review is on oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance between oxidation and antioxidant systems, and its association with AA. It suggests that oxidative stress may trigger the collapse of hair follicle-immune privilege and could be linked to the development of AA. The review also proposes that antioxidants might serve as a potential supplementary therapy for AA in the future.
