    The review article analyzed the clinical, histopathological, etiopathogenic aspects, and current therapies for alopecia areata as of 2005. It emphasized the classification of alopecia areata as an autoimmune disease with a genetic basis and discussed potential pathophysiological mechanisms. The article also reviewed contemporary treatments, particularly for severe forms of the disease, focusing on topical immunomodulatory therapies using squaric acid dibutylester and diphenylcyclopropenone, along with their possible mechanisms of action.
