TLDR Men with male pattern baldness are more likely to have heart disease risk factors, so they should get heart screenings early.
The study conducted in 2014 involved 70 male participants, 35 with male androgenetic alopecia and 35 controls, aged between 35 to 55 years. The research aimed to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and carotid atherosclerosis in male patients with androgenetic alopecia. The results showed that 57.1% of patients with androgenetic alopecia met the criteria for metabolic syndrome compared to 14.3% of the control group. Additionally, 34% of patients with androgenetic alopecia had atheromatous plaques compared to 8.6% of the controls. The study concluded that due to the high frequency of metabolic syndrome and carotid atheromatous plaques in patients with androgenetic alopecia, cardiovascular screening should be conducted for early detection and initiation of preventive treatment before cardiovascular disease becomes established.
