TLDR People with alopecia areata may also have allergic rhinitis and should be checked for respiratory allergies.
The systematic review from June 2019 examined the immunological link between alopecia areata (AA) and respiratory diseases across 32 studies involving 17,623 patients. It found a significant association between AA and allergic rhinitis (AR), with AA patients showing higher prevalence rates of AR (14.3-24.3%) compared to controls (8-12.9%). The association between AA and asthma was less clear, with prevalence among AA patients ranging from 1.34-14.5%. No significant link was found between AA and systemic autoimmune diseases involving the pulmonary system. The review suggested that AA might have a Th2-mediated immunological component and recommended further research into atopic respiratory diseases in AA patients, highlighting the potential for targeted therapies.
