TLDR S100A3 protein is crucial for hair shaft formation in mice.
In this study, researchers cloned the cDNA for mouse S100A3, a cysteine-rich calcium-binding protein, and examined its gene expression during hair follicle development. The S100A3 gene was located on chromosome 3 and was specifically expressed in dorsal skin hair follicles, with mRNA levels peaking during the anagen phase and declining in the regression phase. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemical analysis revealed that S100A3 was prominently expressed and accumulated in cuticular and cortical cells undergoing terminal differentiation. The findings suggested that S100A3 played a crucial role in calcium-dependent processes essential for hair shaft formation.
