TLDR mHa2 and mHa3 keratins have different structures and roles in mouse hair and tongue tissues.
The study focused on the sequence and expression of murine type I hair keratins, specifically mHa2 and mHa3, using a cDNA library from mouse tail epidermis. It identified structural heterogeneity within the type I hair keratin subfamily, with mHa2 being distinct from mHa1, mHa3, and mHa4, particularly in its non-α-helical domains. mHa3 was expressed in cortex cells and the central unit of murine lingual filiform papillae, while mHa2 expression was restricted to the cuticle of the hair shaft. These findings suggested that the structural differences among these keratins were functionally significant in the development of hard α-keratin-expressing tissues.
