TLDR Human hair keratin genes hHa2 and hHb1 are located on chromosomes 17 and 12.
Researchers constructed a cDNA library from human scalp RNA to study hair keratin genes, isolating and sequencing two keratin clones: type I (phKI-2) and type II (phKII-1). These were identified as human hair keratins hHa2 and hHb1 through sequence homology with murine and sheep keratins. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization, the hHa2 gene was mapped to chromosome 17q12-q21 and the hHb1 gene to chromosome 12q13, aligning with known loci for epithelial keratins.
