Gender-specific association of androgenetic alopecia with metabolic syndrome in a middle-aged Korean population
August 2012
in “British Journal of Dermatology”
TLDR Female hair loss linked to metabolic syndrome, not in males.
This study investigated the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in a middle-aged Korean population. The study found that there was a statistically significant positive association between the prevalence of MetS and AGA in the female group, but not in the male group. The study suggests that AGA may be a marker for metabolic syndrome in men and highlights the importance of early detection and management of metabolic syndrome in individuals with AGA.
