This study investigated the correlation between androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and coronary heart disease, as well as the significance of certain lipid parameters on this relationship. Forty-one men with vertex type AGA were compared to 36 age-matched men with normal hair status. Results indicated that 47% of patients and 30% of controls had a lipoprotein (a) level more than 30 mg/dl higher than the critical level for atherosclerotic heart disease, suggesting an increased risk of CHD in those with AGA. The study concluded that dermatologists should investigate lipid profiles, especially Lp(a), in patients with androgenetic alopecia and refer them to a cardiologist if necessary.
