TLDR Milk thistle can protect skin from damage and aging.
The document reviews the protective effects of Silybum marianum (milk thistle) on skin health, emphasizing its potential in treating skin aging, acne, hair loss, wound healing, and skin cancer. Silymarin, a key compound, reduces oxidative stress, enhances collagen synthesis, and improves skin hydration and elasticity. It also shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, aiding in acne management and hair growth. Silymarin accelerates wound healing and exhibits chemopreventive effects in skin cancer models. The review highlights advancements in extraction technologies, such as enzyme-assisted and supercritical CO2 extraction, which enhance silymarin yield. Despite promising results, further clinical studies and sustainable extraction methods are needed to maximize therapeutic benefits and ensure safety.
