TLDR Specific tests may help diagnose alopecia, but their treatment impact is unclear.
The expert consensus on serological testing for alopecia indicates that while no universal tests are recommended for hair loss, specific tests may be useful depending on the clinical diagnosis. For nonscarring alopecias like androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and alopecia areata, tests such as vitamin D, TSH, and zinc levels are considered, although their impact on treatment outcomes is unclear. Scalp biopsy is recommended for scarring alopecia. The consensus stresses the importance of diagnosis-specific testing and acknowledges the limitations of current evidence, suggesting that recommendations may change with future research.
